SAFE
Project Update – August 2025
AkiDwA has officially
begun the SAFE – Support and Aid for Female Genital Mutilation and Early Forced
Marriage project.
The SAFE Project
(Support and Aid for Female Genital Mutilation and Early Forced Marriage)
aims to empower communities to prevent FGM and early/forced marriage,
strengthen the capacity of professionals in health, asylum, and education
sectors, and foster EU-wide collaboration to protect women and girls. Through
training, behaviour change activities, advocacy, and the creation of an online
platform, SAFE promotes mutual learning and systemic change to end harmful
practices affecting women and girls.
The SAFE Project
officially kicked off in Rome in June 2025, bringing together AkiDwA and other
EU-based partner organizations implementing the project. In Ireland, AkiDwA
held its national kick-off in early May in Galway, gathering our team and
community partners to align on activities and goals. The international kick-off
with Community experts and leaders followed in September 2025, connecting all
partners across Europe to coordinate strategies and share best practices. More
than 40 Community Experts and Leaders from different countries participated,
setting a strong foundation for collaboration throughout the project.
Currently, trainings
are well underway on key topics such as gender-based violence, communication
and didactic skills, advocacy, and awareness-raising. We are proud to have 6
Community Experts and 2 Community Leaders engaged with us – all from countries where
FGM and early/forced marriage are practiced – ensuring that our work is
culturally relevant and community-led.
Through this work,
AkiDwA continues to support migrant communities, foster dialogue, and
contribute to ending harmful practices affecting women and girls in Ireland and
beyond.
